The Tora people live in northwestern Brazil’s state of Amazonas near the mouth of the Marmelos River. They nearly became extinct as a people in the 1700s when the Portuguese hunted them down. They were pacified and forced to live on farms in the early 20th century.
Their food source comes from hunting, fishing and collecting forest produce such as brazil nuts. They sell these nuts to outsiders.
The Tora people hope to have their homeland legally protected and to have some of their people learn medical skills.
The Tora have a small Roman Catholic influence, but most remain dedicated to their traditional religion. Their religion is about all they have left of their culture. They don’t even have their own language, but instead they speak Portuguese.
They know they must have some of their own trained as lawyers to protect their homeland and medical professionals to provide them with adequate care.
Pray for the Lord to provide protection and mercy for the Tora people of Brazil.
Pray for members of the Tora tribe who love the Lord to teach Christ to others.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to move among the Tora people this decade, providing them with a hope and a purpose.
